Mapping Soils in Cook County

Tom DeWitt and his son, Ben, have been mapping soil in and around the Grand Marais area as part of the Natural Resource Conservation Service Arrowhead Soil Survey project. In the photo above, the soil surveyors can be seen gathering samples and making observations near the Grand Marais library. Surveyors depend on the cooperation of local landowners to gather important data necessary for mapping the soil. The Arrowhead Soil Survey project is scheduled to complete mapping of soils in Cook County by late 2014. The Soil Survey is funded in part by the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund as recommended by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources.
