Power Outage Affecting Portions of Grand Marais and County – Sheltering Options Identified

January 7, 2018, 10:15 pm – A power outage which began earlier this evening due to a bad underground cable is affecting large portions of the City of Grand Marais east of Birchwood. It is believed to extend as far east as Croftville. The Public Utilities Commission is working to identify the scope and possible duration of the outage and is working with Cook County Emergency Management and the Sheriff’s Office.

“If possible, and it is safe to do so, people who have alternate means of heat or power are encouraged to shelter in place and assist their neighbors,” said Emergency Management Director Valerie Marasco. “The Cook County Senior Center has been identified as a shelter location and is now open for people who have concerns related to being without power and heat overnight.”

People with medical related issues and vulnerable populations including those with young children and any elderly population who feel they need a safe place to go are welcome to go to the Senior Center located at 10 Broadway Ave in Grand Marais. Public Health & Human Services staff will be onsite overnight.

Arrowhead Transit, through the Senior Center, is available to transport people to the shelter if needed. To request accessible transportation, contact the Senior Center directly at 387-2660.

In addition, the Aspen Lodge is also offering a 50% discounted rate of $49 for anyone who would like to stay at the hotel tonight as a result of the power outage.

Additional updates will be issued when more information is available.
